Explain how long-distance transport of water occurs in plants.

(N/A) Long-distance transport of water in plants occurs through a process called mass flow or bulk flow,facilitated by the vascular tissues.
$1$. Limitations of Diffusion: Diffusion is a slow process suitable only for short-distance movement (e.g.,across a cell of $50 \mu m$). It cannot support the movement of substances over long distances in complex plants.
$2$. Requirement of a Transport System: In large plants,the sites of absorption (roots) and the sites of utilization (leaves) are far apart. Therefore,a specialized long-distance transport system is necessary to move substances at a faster rate.
$3$. Mass or Bulk Flow: This is the movement of substances in bulk from one point to another due to pressure differences between two points. Unlike diffusion,where substances move independently based on concentration gradients,in mass flow,all substances (in solution or suspension) move at the same pace.
$4$. Role of Vascular Tissues: Higher plants possess specialized vascular tissues,$Xylem$ and $Phloem$.
$5$. Translocation: The bulk movement of substances through these conducting tissues is called translocation.
$6$. Xylem Function: $Xylem$ is responsible for the translocation of water,mineral salts,some organic nitrogen,and hormones from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant.
$7$. Phloem Function: $Phloem$ translocates various organic and inorganic solutes,primarily from the leaves to other parts of the plant.

(N/A) Location: The Casparian strip is located in the endodermis of the root.
Role in water movement: The endodermal cells have deposition of water-impermeable,waxy material called suberin in the form of Casparian strips. Due to this,water molecules are unable to penetrate the endodermis through the apoplast pathway. Consequently,water is forced to enter the cytoplasm of the endodermal cells through the cell membrane,thereby switching from the apoplast pathway to the symplast pathway to reach the xylem.
