This process is based on the principle that impurities are more soluble in the molten state of the metal than in the solid state. $A$ circular mobile heater is fixed at one end of a rod of the impure metal. As the heater moves,the pure metal crystallizes out of the melt,and the impurities pass into the adjacent molten zone. This process is repeated several times until the impurities are concentrated at one end,which is then cut off.
