(C) The reaction of an amino acid (tryptophan) with $SOCl_2$ in $CH_3OH$ is a standard method for esterification. $1$. $SOCl_2$ reacts with the carboxylic acid group $(-COOH)$ to form an acid chloride intermediate $(-COCl)$. $2$. The acid chloride then reacts with methanol $(CH_3OH)$ to form the methyl ester $(-COOCH_3)$. $3$. Since the reaction is carried out in an acidic medium (generated by $SOCl_2$ and $HCl$ byproduct),the basic amino group $(-NH_2)$ gets protonated to form the hydrochloride salt ($-NH_3^+Cl^-$ or $-NH_2 \cdot HCl$). Thus,the major product is the methyl ester hydrochloride salt of tryptophan.
