When benzotrichloride is treated with aqueous $NaOH$,the three chlorine atoms are replaced by hydroxyl groups to form an unstable intermediate,phenylmethanetriol $(C_6H_5C(OH)_3)$.$3$. This intermediate loses a water molecule to form benzoic acid $(C_6H_5COOH)$,which exists as sodium benzoate $(C_6H_5COONa)$ in the presence of excess $NaOH$. Upon acidification,it yields benzoic acid.
