In lactose,the anomeric carbon of the galactose unit is involved in the glycosidic linkage,making it non-reducing. However,the anomeric carbon of the glucose unit remains free,which allows it to exist in equilibrium with its open-chain aldehyde form. Therefore,the glucose part of the lactose molecule is responsible for its reducing property.
