For $heptan-3-ol$ $(CH_3CH_2CH(OH)CH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3)$,dehydration can occur by removing a hydrogen from $C-2$ or $C-4$. Removing $H$ from $C-4$ gives $hept-3-ene$ $(CH_3CH_2CH=CHCH_2CH_2CH_3)$. Removing $H$ from $C-2$ gives $hept-2-ene$ $(CH_3CH=CHCH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3)$. For $heptan-4-ol$ $(CH_3CH_2CH_2CH(OH)CH_2CH_2CH_3)$,the molecule is symmetrical.
