(N/A) Carbon dioxide $(CO_2)$ is acidic in nature, while potassium hydroxide $(KOH)$ is a strong base.
When $CO_2$ gas is passed through the $KOH$ solution,it reacts to form potassium carbonate $(K_2CO_3)$ and water $(H_2O)$ according to the following chemical equation:
$2KOH + CO_2 \longrightarrow K_2CO_3 + H_2O$
As a result, the mass of the $U$-tube containing $KOH$ increases.
This increase in the mass of the $U$-tube corresponds to the mass of $CO_2$ produced during the combustion of the organic compound.
By measuring this mass, the percentage of carbon in the organic compound can be accurately calculated.
