As the ground heats up,the air layers near the surface become less dense (rarer) compared to the layers above. Light rays from a distant object travel from a denser medium to a rarer medium and undergo continuous refraction,bending away from the normal. When the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle,the light rays undergo total internal reflection,creating an inverted image of the object,which appears as a mirage.
