According to this theory,the accumulation of $K^+$ ions in guard cells is responsible for the decrease in water potential,which leads to the entry of water into the guard cells,causing them to become turgid and the stomata to open. Conversely,the efflux of $K^+$ ions leads to the loss of water,causing the guard cells to become flaccid and the stomata to close.
