To achieve this,the cell walls of the plant cells are first removed using enzymes. The resulting protoplasts are then brought into contact and induced to fuse using specific agents known as fusogens. Commonly used chemical fusogens include Polyethylene glycol $(PEG)$ and sodium nitrate $(NaNO_3)$. Electrofusion is another physical method used for this purpose. Once fused,the protoplasts regenerate their cell walls and develop into somatic hybrid cells.
