The mammalian heart is myogenic,meaning the heartbeat results from a wave of electrical potential called a cardiac impulse,which arises from the sinoatrial node ($SA$ node) and spreads over the cardiac chambers.The $SA$ node lies in the wall of the right atrium near the opening of the superior vena cava and contracts about $72$ times per minute. From the $SA$ node,the cardiac impulse travels to the atrioventricular node ($AV$ node),which lies between the right atrium and the ventricle.Then,the impulse passes to the $AV$ bundle (also called the Bundle of His). The branches of the $AV$ bundle extend along the interventricular septum and reach the Purkinje fibres in the ventricles.The Bundle of His provides the only route for the transmission of the wave of excitation from the atria to the ventricles. Purkinje fibres conduct the impulses five times more rapidly than the surrounding cells,forming a pathway that ensures the heart muscle contracts in the most efficient manner.
