However,due to the high charge density of the $Mg^{2+}$ ion,the remaining water molecules undergo hydrolysis with $MgCl_2$ instead of simple evaporation. The reaction is as follows: $MgCl_2 \cdot 6H_2O \xrightarrow{\Delta} MgO + 2HCl + 5H_2O$ Thus,the final product obtained upon strong heating is magnesium oxide $(MgO)$.
