(N/A) Gas vacuoles, also known as pseudo-vacuoles or air vacuoles, are specialized structures found in certain prokaryotes, such as cyanobacteria, purple and green photosynthetic bacteria.
Each gas vacuole is composed of numerous sub-microscopic,hollow,cylindrical,or hexagonal vesicles.
These vesicles are enclosed by a thin, rigid protein membrane that is permeable to gases but impermeable to water.
Their primary function is to regulate buoyancy, allowing the organism to float at an optimal depth for photosynthesis or nutrient acquisition.
