Ozone is formed in the atmosphere when energetic $UV$ radiation dissociates molecules of oxygen $(O_2)$ into separate oxygen atoms $(O)$. These free oxygen atoms can recombine with oxygen molecules to form ozone $(O_3)$. $O_2 + UV \rightarrow O + O$ $O + O_2 \rightarrow O_3$ Ozone molecules can also be decomposed by $UV$ radiation into a free atom and an oxygen molecule. Thus,ozone is continuously created and destroyed in the atmosphere by $UV$ radiation coming from the sun.
