The $-OH$ group is a strong activating group,directing the incoming electrophile $Br^+$ to the ortho position. This yields $X$ ($3$-bromo-$4$-methyl-$5$-hydroxybenzaldehyde).Step $2$: The compound $X$ undergoes the Cannizzaro reaction with concentrated $KOH$ followed by acid workup $(H_3O^+)$. The aldehyde group $(-CHO)$ is converted into a mixture of alcohol $(-CH_2OH)$ and carboxylic acid $(-COOH)$ groups.
