They grew some bacteriophages in a medium containing radioactive phosphorus $(^{32}P)$ to label the $DNA$,as phosphorus is present in $DNA$ but not in proteins. They grew other bacteriophages in a medium containing radioactive sulfur $(^{35}S)$ to label the proteins,as sulfur is present in amino acids (proteins) but not in $DNA$. By tracking these isotopes,they demonstrated that only the $DNA$ entered the bacterial cell,confirming it as the genetic material.
