In the first step,the anomeric hydroxyl group is protonated to form a good leaving group $(-OH_2^+)$. Loss of water leads to the formation of an oxocarbenium ion at the anomeric carbon. This carbocation is stabilized by resonance with the lone pair of the ring oxygen atom,making it an oxocarbenium ion. Therefore,the intermediate is a carbocation which undergoes resonance.
