Each methyl group is attached to an $sp^2$ hybridized carbon of the ring,making the carbon of the methyl group an $\alpha$-carbon. Each methyl group has $3$ $\alpha$-hydrogens. Thus,total $\alpha$-hydrogens $= 3 + 3 = 6$.In structure $(ii)$,which is $1,3$-diethylbenzene,there are two ethyl groups attached to the benzene ring. The carbon of the ethyl group directly attached to the benzene ring is the $\alpha$-carbon. Each $\alpha$-carbon in an ethyl group has $2$ $\alpha$-hydrogens.
