(A) In $C_4$ plants,the primary $CO_2$ fixation occurs in the mesophyll cells.$CO_2$ combines with phosphoenolpyruvate $(PEP)$ to form a $4$-carbon compound called oxaloacetic acid $(OAA)$ with the help of the enzyme $PEP$ carboxylase.This oxaloacetic acid is then converted into other $4$-carbon compounds like malic acid or aspartic acid within the same mesophyll cells.These $4$-carbon acids are then transported to the bundle sheath cells for further processing in the Calvin cycle.Therefore,both oxaloacetic acid and malic acid/aspartic acid are found in the mesophyll cells.
