In this reaction,the secondary amine reacts with nitrous acid $(HNO_2)$ to form a yellow-colored $N$-nitrosoamine. This nitrosoamine,when warmed with phenol and concentrated $H_2SO_4$,produces a green or blue color,which turns red upon dilution with water and then green or blue again upon adding an alkali like $NaOH$.
