Inside the furnace,$CaCO_3$ decomposes to form lime $(CaO)$ and carbon dioxide $(CO_2)$: $CaCO_3 \rightarrow CaO + CO_2$ The lime $(CaO)$ then reacts with silica $(SiO_2)$,which is an acidic impurity (gangue) present in the ore,to form calcium silicate $(CaSiO_3)$: $CaO + SiO_2 \rightarrow CaSiO_3$ This calcium silicate $(CaSiO_3)$ is known as slag,which is molten and floats on top of the molten iron. Therefore,the calcium ions end up in the slag.
