Since the $-CH_3$ group is ortho/para directing,and the para position is sterically less hindered,the major product formed is $4-$methylacetophenone.$2$. The second step involves the oxidation of both the $-CH_3$ group and the $-COCH_3$ group using alkaline $KMnO_4$ followed by acidic workup with dilute $H_2SO_4$. Both alkyl and acyl side chains attached to the benzene ring are oxidized to carboxylic acid groups $(-COOH)$.$3$.
