As a result,abnormal cells develop and spread throughout the body.In a healthy body,cell growth and differentiation are highly controlled and regulated mechanisms.In cancer cells,there is a breakdown of these regulatory mechanisms.Normal cells exhibit a property called contact inhibition,by virtue of which contact with other cells inhibits their uncontrolled growth.Cancerous cells appear to have lost this property of contact inhibition. Consequently,they continue to divide indefinitely,giving rise to masses of cells known as tumors.
