(N/A) Hypoxia is a condition characterized by an inadequate or decreased supply of oxygen to the tissues of the body. It is caused by several extrinsic and intrinsic factors.
The different types of hypoxia are discussed below:
$1$. Hypoxemic hypoxia: In this condition, there is a reduction in the oxygen content of blood as a result of the low partial pressure of oxygen $(pO_{2})$ in the arterial blood.
$2$. Anaemic hypoxia: In this condition, there is a reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood due to a decrease in the concentration of haemoglobin or red blood cells.
$3$. Stagnant or ischemic hypoxia: In this condition, there is a deficiency in the oxygen supply to tissues because of poor or slow blood circulation.
$4$. Histotoxic hypoxia: In this condition, the tissues are unable to utilize oxygen even though it is present in the blood. This often occurs during cyanide poisoning, which inhibits cellular respiration.
