(B) Chloroform $(CHCl_3)$ is slowly oxidized by air in the presence of light to form an extremely poisonous gas called carbonyl chloride,also known as phosgene $(COCl_2)$.The reaction is: $2CHCl_3 + O_2 \rightarrow 2COCl_2 + 2HCl$.To prevent this oxidation,chloroform is stored in dark-colored bottles filled up to the brim and a small amount of ethyl alcohol $(C_2H_5OH)$ is added to it.The ethyl alcohol converts any phosgene formed into harmless diethyl carbonate $(CO(OC_2H_5)_2)$.
