This leads to the loss of the negative pressure,causing the lungs to collapse (a condition known as pneumothorax). As the lungs collapse,the body attempts to compensate for the reduced gas exchange by increasing the breathing rate to maintain oxygen levels. Therefore,the breathing rate increases.
