The reaction involves the reduction of nitrate ions to nitric oxide $(NO)$. The $NO$ then reacts with the hydrated ferrous sulfate $[Fe(H_2O)_6]SO_4$ to form a nitroso-ferrous sulfate complex,$[Fe(H_2O)_5(NO)]SO_4$,which is brown in color.
