(N/A) Addiction is a psychological attachment to certain effects, such as euphoria and a temporary feeling of well-being,associated with drugs and alcohol. Even when the user knows that the use of these substances is harmful, they continue to consume them due to this psychological craving.
With repeated use of drugs or alcohol, the tolerance level of the receptors in our body increases. Consequently, the receptors respond only to higher doses of these substances, leading to greater intake and addiction.
Dependence is the tendency of the body to manifest a characteristic and unpleasant 'withdrawal syndrome' if regular doses of drugs or alcohol are abruptly discontinued. Symptoms of withdrawal syndrome include anxiety, shakiness, nausea, and sweating. These symptoms may be relieved when the use of the substance is resumed. In some cases, withdrawal symptoms can be severe and life-threatening,requiring medical supervision.
Due to dependence, the individual may ignore social norms and engage in illegal or unethical activities to procure the substances, leading to serious social and personal problems.
