These plates consist of cartilage that actively divides during childhood and adolescence to increase bone length. Once an individual reaches puberty,these epiphyseal plates undergo ossification (turn into bone) and fuse,effectively stopping further longitudinal growth of the bones. Therefore,even if there is an excess secretion of growth hormone in adults (a condition known as acromegaly),the bones can no longer increase in length,although they may thicken or grow in width.
