(A) Activated sludge refers to the sedimented bacterial flocs that are produced during the secondary treatment of sewage. In the aeration tank,aerobic microbes grow rapidly to form flocs (masses of bacteria associated with fungal filaments). These flocs consume the major part of the organic matter in the sewage. Once the $BOD$ (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) of the sewage is significantly reduced,the effluent is passed into a settling tank where the bacterial flocs are allowed to sediment. This sediment is called 'activated sludge'.
