In this reaction,the carboxylate groups $(-COOK)$ are removed as $CO_2$ at the anode,and a new bond is formed between the carbon atoms where the carboxylate groups were attached. The starting material is a derivative of $1,4$-dihydro-naphthalene$-1,4-$dicarboxylic acid. Upon electrolysis,the two carboxylate groups are eliminated,and a double bond is formed between the $C_1$ and $C_4$ positions,leading to the formation of $1,4$-dihydronaphthalene,which then aromatizes to form naphthalene $(C_{10}H_8)$ as the stable major product.
