Ethyl alcohol is oxidized to acetaldehyde,which then reacts with iodine (generated in situ) in the presence of base to form iodoform $(CHI_3)$. $C_2H_5OH + 4I_2 + 6Na_2CO_3 \rightarrow CHI_3 + HCOONa + 5NaI + 5NaHCO_3$. $CHI_3$ appears as yellow crystals.
