Benzene reacts with a mixture of concentrated nitric acid $(HNO_3)$ and concentrated sulfuric acid $(H_2SO_4)$ at a temperature of $50-60 \ ^\circ C$. The reaction is: $C_6H_6 + HNO_3 \xrightarrow{conc. H_2SO_4, 50-60 \ ^\circ C} C_6H_5NO_2 + H_2O$. Here,$H_2SO_4$ acts as a catalyst to generate the electrophile $NO_2^+$ (nitronium ion).
