$(i)$ Solar energy is converted into potential energy $(PE)$ of water vapour as water evaporates from oceans, rivers, and lakes. This vapour forms clouds and eventually falls as rain or snow on mountains.
$(ii)$ When rain falls or snow melts, the potential energy of the water is converted into kinetic energy $(KE)$ as it flows into streams and rivers.
$(iii)$ When this flowing water is collected and stored in a dam, its kinetic energy is converted back into potential energy $(PE)$ due to its height.
$(iv)$ When water is released from the dam, this potential energy is converted into kinetic energy $(KE)$ as the water rushes downwards.
$(v)$ The kinetic energy of the falling water rotates the turbines, which in turn drive a generator to produce electricity. Thus, the original source of this energy is solar energy.
